SAMPLE COASTAL ITINERARY DEPARTING FROM SAN VINCENZO OR CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI

SUVERETO-CASALAPPI-SASSETTA-BARATTI/POPULONIA

Our ride will begin just after breakfast, around 09:00 am. We’ll head south along the coastal road known as the Principessa, cutting inland towards Venturina. We’ll continue on towards the town of Suvereto via Casalappi and San Lorenzo. Before arriving in Suvereto however, we will turn right and head yet further in land, making a left turn towards Pian delle Vigne several kilometres further on. A short climb will bring us to the small village of Sassetta from where we will take one of the area’s most beautiful roads, twisting through the Mediterranean woods back down to Suvereto. Here we will stop for a look around the town and have a cafè break as well. Afterwards we can begin the 45 minute ride back to our hotel for lunch. The ride distance is approximately 60 km. After lunch, a guided visit to the Etruscan ruins at Baratti/Populonia.

CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI – BOLGHERI – CASALE MARITTIMO

We head north in the area known for its Super Tuscan wines, Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Once off the Via Aurelia coastal road, we will be on the Via Bolgherese upon which some of Italy’s most famous vineyards can be found. On our way north we will skirt by the village of Bolgheri and continue on through the rolling wine country, climbing up to the village of Casale Marittimo. From here we will descend directly towards the sea and at the bottom, make a left turn for La California, the town where Olympic Champion Paolo Bettini is from. From this road we will head back towards Bibbona and return to Bolgheri on the same quiet road that we followed earlier. In Bolgheri we can visit some of the well stocked “enoteche” or wine stores and for enthusiasts, we can have a wine tasting. Afterwards, following small country roads, we will begin the return journey to our hotel and lunch. Ride distance is approximately 60 km. Afternoon guided walking tour of Castagneto Carducci with visit to another enoteca with wine tasting

In Monteverdi we’ll stop for a break and to check out the famous Mucci brothers delicatessen. From there we’ll continue on to Canneto and a long descent back to the valley. From there we will be able to cruise back to our hotel

Today we will ride the favourite route of the local cyclists, parts of which you will have seen but which are well worth repeating. Leaving our hotel we will head north along Via Aurelia, turning inland before reaching Donoratico and heading up to Castagneto Carducci. From there we will head towards Sassetta and the twisting road that will bring us to Suvereto and our final cafè stop in the lovely area in front of the city gates.
